october in newport

october in orange county is awesome in its own way – the weather turns cooler and all of the tourists leave and the beach becomes ours again. the sunsets are amazing – the beach becomes a quieter and more peaceful place to be. life had gotten away from me and i had not been out to the beach to shoot in a while. i made it back out on oct 1 and got some of the best shots yet…

on any given afternoon i will shoot a couple hundred images and maybe like 1 in 50 – i am pretty critical in general and really critical of my own stuff but it was a really great day. my favorite is the first image below, i had been shooting some surfers and turned to peak down the beach at a father and his kids, i snapped off a few and thought little of it until i was reviewing all of the images the next day – i love the shot for technical reasons; light, comp, dof, etc – but the girl is really what wins me over. she must have been about 8 years old but in this brief moment she is strikingly mature with a presence that i cant put into words…

moments after this photo was taken my roommate began to climb a phone poll taunting spiderman “hey spiderman can you do this!?”

spiderman watched calmly as brandon climbed and after a long pause replied “dude…. i am way to drunk to do that.”

and the cries were heard from around the world as childhood dreams of so many were so carelessly torn away…
